Grammarly AI Review – How Good Is Grammarly As An AI Writer?

by Tom Kotze

Grammarly is the gold standard when it comes to spell-checking tools. Although, the platform can do a lot more than just correct spelling errors though.

For this Grammarly review, I used the premium version to try out its AI writing abilities. I’ll outline my experience using Grammarly premium to write a blog post to help you figure out just how good this tool is.

If you’re looking at AI writing tools, follow this Grammarly review to find out whether it’s worth it.

What is Grammarly?

Grammarly is an AI-powered writing assistant. The critical word in that sentence is “assistant.” This is because Grammarly won’t generate all the content for you, unlike other AI writing tools.

Instead, it will help you improve existing content by fixing any grammatical errors, avoiding overused words keeping your writing concise, and making it sound more confident.

Most people will know about Grammarly’s free tool for spell-checking your content. However, Grammarly also has a more advanced Premium version that gives you more insights to fix your writing.

Grammarly Premium Features

  • You can choose your style of English, and Grammarly will optimize your content for this
  • Checks correctness
  • Checks clarity
  • Checks engagement
  • Checks delivery
  • You can set specifications on your audience and writing goals
  • Works alongside any content editor

Overall Grammarly Review

I give Grammarly 4 out of 5 stars.

Pros

  • Probably the most advanced tool for checking spelling and grammar errors
  • It helps writers create far better content
  • Extremely easy to use
  • There is an excellent free version available
  • Improves writing in many different ways

Cons

  • Not a long-form AI writing tool
  • It needs to be used with a human writer

Conclusion

Grammarly is an AI-powered writing assistant, not a complete AI writing tool. It won’t be able to replace a writer or generate ideas for you. That being said, Grammarly is one of the most advanced AI writing tools for accuracy and quality. It can vastly improve any content, and it’s an absolute must for any writer in today’s world.

Grammarly 3rd Party Reviews

Grammarly is an incredibly popular tool with a widely used freemium version. Naturally, there are many positive reviews for the software.

My Grammarly Experience

For this Grammarly review, I tried out Grammarly Premium to test the platform’s AI writing abilities.

Let’s just get something clear before we dive into it - Grammarly is not like the other AI writing tools I’ve reviewed. It can’t be used to generate your content for you, and it won’t write different types of long-form content.

Instead, Grammarly is used to optimize the existing content that you write. So, you have to have a human content writer first, and then you can use Grammarly to improve this. Or, you could use Grammarly to optimize content written by another AI writing tool.

Whatever the case, Grammarly can’t be used to write a blog post alone, but it can be used to make your blog post infinitely better.

With that out of the way, let’s dive into this Grammarly review.

Signing Up

Most people use Grammarly’s free version.

Just go to their website, click “Get Grammarly,” and the Grammarly Installer file will download. Follow the simple step to installing Grammarly on your device, and voila, you’re ready to start improving your writing.

You can upgrade this to Grammarly Premium on your profile by choosing your plan and adding in your billing information.

Grammarly is used as an extension on your web browser, so make sure that you have this installed. This will be able to access pretty much any editor you use to write content online (such as email or Google docs).

If you write in programs like Word, then you’ll use the version of Grammarly installed on your desktop.

Grammarly also has its own cloud-based content editor. You can access this through your profile on Grammarly.com.

Pricing

Most people use Grammarly’s free version. This has become an essential tool in today’s world. However, we’re looking at the premium version. Grammarly has two paid options. These are:

  • Premium (for individuals) at $12/month
  • Business (for teams) starting at $25/month for two members, going up to $1738.33/month for 150+ members

Grammarly’s popular free tool can only be used for picking up spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes. The paid versions offer a more in-depth AI writing assistant to help you craft better writing.

For only $12/month per member, Grammarly offers excellent value. Sure, it doesn’t do as much as AI writers like Jarvis or Frase, but it's a lot cheaper.

Using Grammarly

If you’ve ever written something on a computer, you’ll know how to use Grammarly.

The tool underlines any errors in your writing in different colors. Each color represents a different error. You just click on the underlined word or sentence, and Grammarly will show a suggestion on how to improve this. Click on that suggestion, and your writing is fixed. Simple.

I won’t illustrate the spell checker tool because you probably already know how this works.

Here’s an example of a demo document that Grammarly uses to illustrate its Premium software:

You click on the underlined phrase, and Grammarly reveals the error and offers an improvement, like this:

grammarly functionality

First, I thought I’d try Grammarly’s online editor. I went onto my profile and clicked “New.”

I started writing a short paragraph titled “What is SEO?”. This is what I wrote, and Grammarly detected no issues with it:

So I wrote a new version below and purposefully made it poorly written. Here is what I wrote and how Grammarly suggested improving it:

And:

grammarly how it works

Well done, Grammarly. That certainly helps the paragraph.

I tried this approach one more time with a terribly written paragraph. Grammarly picked up these errors:

And these errors:

Now, here’s the thing about Grammarly: it can help you write technically correct sentences, but it can’t ensure your content says the right thing. For example, I could write a passage like this:

grammary rewrite

Grammarly marks this as perfect, even though it makes no sense as a passage. If you’re using an AI writing tool like Jarvis, it can write entire passages for you based on the topic you choose.

I usually write in Google Docs, so I moved my Grammarly review there. Like I mentioned earlier, Grammarly has an extension that you can add to your browser. This picks up any of your errors and displays them on the right side of your doc.

grammarly premium options

A cool feature of Grammarly is that you can set your goals and audience specifics to make sure the tool helps you create the right content. This helps Grammarly to achieve the right tone across your content.

Then, once you’ve written your content, Grammarly assesses it based on different factors. These are displayed on the right menu.

Here’s a passage that I wrote before Grammarly edited it:

And here’s how it looked after Grammarly’s suggestions:

Much better.

Grammarly also has a synonyms feature for Android to help you find better words. It looks like this:

Content Quality

When it comes to writing quality content, Grammarly is the gold standard. Grammarly is the tool you use to make sure your content is 100% error-free. I don’t think I’ve ever come across a Grammarly suggestion that I’d rather ignore.

First, Grammarly improves your spelling and grammar better than any other tool. Then with the premium version, you can cut down on passive voice, improve clarity, choose stronger words, improve sentence delivery, and make your content more engaging. All of this works amazingly well.

I can’t directly compare Grammarly and the other AI writing tools that I’ve reviewed, because they perform pretty different functions. Grammarly can’t write a blog post (or anything else) for you. What it can do is improve the content you write a great deal. So if you’re looking for a long-form AI writer, you won’t find it in Grammarly.

Grammarly’s AI technology is advanced though, and it can help you achieve far better results than any other AI writing tool. Grammarly’s AI suggestions seem to have a much better understanding of the written word than other tools.

So for what it does, Grammarly offers exceptionally high-quality content.

What Errors Did I Find?

I use Grammarly as my default app for checking errors. In fact, I trust it with grammar more than I trust myself. So, I can’t say that I found any errors with this Grammarly review.
