ChatGPT SEO: How to Get Your Brand Cited in ChatGPT

by Adie Marais

TL;DR

  • ChatGPT SEO is the work of getting your pages cited, and your brand named, in ChatGPT’s answers.
  • ChatGPT search pulls sources from a live web search, and one study matched more than 87% of its citations to Bing’s top 20 results, so Bing indexing matters a lot.
  • Start with access: let OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, verify it in Bing Webmaster Tools, and turn on IndexNow.
  • Then work on the pages and the mentions: direct answers, named sources and statistics, and coverage on third-party sites ChatGPT already cites.

ChatGPT SEO covers what a brand does to appear in ChatGPT’s answers when buyers ask it for recommendations, comparisons, or explanations in your category. As more buyers research in AI search, a brand that is missing from the AI response is missing from the options they compare.

If you rank well on Google but rarely see your brand in ChatGPT, this guide is for you. It explains how ChatGPT picks sources and gives you the steps to get cited so you can get in front of your target audience.

The common assumption is that a strong Google ranking carries over. It mostly doesn’t: an Ahrefs study of 15,000 prompts found that only 8% of ChatGPT’s in-text citations matched pages in Google’s top 10 for the same query.

What Is ChatGPT SEO?

ChatGPT SEO is the practice of optimizing your site and your off-site presence so ChatGPT cites your pages as sources and names your brand in its answers. It’s part of generative engine optimization (GEO), which covers AI platforms in general, including Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.

ChatGPT SEO extends search engine optimization. Traditional SEO still decides whether traditional search engines can find and rank a page, and ChatGPT SEO adds the work of getting AI models and other AI systems to quote that page and name your brand.

The audience is large enough to plan for. An estimate reported by Search Engine Land in 2025 put ChatGPT at about 37.5 million searches a day, roughly one 373rd of Google’s volume. Google still handles far more searches, so ChatGPT SEO adds to your Google work and doesn’t replace it.

Citations and mentions are the different outcomes you can get. A citation is a link to your page in the sources ChatGPT shows with its answer. A mention is your brand name in the answer text, with or without a link. And ideally, you want both.

Tracking AI brand mentions and citations together shows your brand’s visibility in AI search results.

How ChatGPT Chooses Which Sources to Cite

ChatGPT answers from two places: what the model learned during training and pages it finds through a live web search. OpenAI doesn’t publish a list of ranking factors for its AI models, so this section relies on OpenAI’s documentation and published studies.

For many questions, ChatGPT answers from its training data and cites nothing. When it runs a web search, it reads the results and cites the pages it used. ChatGPT uses natural language processing (NLP) to read a user’s question and match it to passages that answer it, so pages written in plain, natural language are easier for it to use.

OpenAI’s publishers and developers FAQ says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, as long as it doesn’t block OAI-SearchBot, the crawler OpenAI uses for search results.

Why Bing Rankings Matter

OpenAI doesn’t publish which search providers feed ChatGPT. However, there have been studies to test it.

Seer Interactive ran about 100 questions through ChatGPT search for a study published in February 2025. It matched more than 87% of the 500-plus citations to Bing’s top 20 organic results, compared with about 56% for Google.

That sample is small, and Ahrefs’ larger study found little difference between Google and Bing overlap.

Both point to the same thing: a page that isn’t in Bing’s index has fewer chances to be found, even when Google indexing is complete.

Third-Party Mentions

When ChatGPT recommends providers, it often cites lists, reviews, and articles on other sites rather than the providers’ own pages. Seer found that affiliates, news sites, and aggregators were the most-cited site types in its sample.

Your own pages tell ChatGPT what you say about yourself, and mentions elsewhere tell it what others say.

Building authority takes consensus signals from reputable sources, meaning several independent sites that say the same thing about your brand. A brand appearing in relevant publications in its industry gives ChatGPT more than one source to confirm the claim. And it adds to your brand’s visibility beyond your own domain.

How to Rank in ChatGPT: 7 Steps

The first two steps make sure ChatGPT can find your pages. The rest make those pages worth citing and get your brand named on other sites.

1. Let OpenAI’s Crawlers Reach Your Site

Check your robots.txt for rules that block AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot or ChatGPT-User, the agent that fetches pages when a user asks ChatGPT to read them.

OpenAI treats GPTBot, its training crawler, separately, so you can block training and still appear in search.

Perplexity and other AI systems use their own crawlers, so check their user agents too.

Then check your host and CDN, because a firewall or bot-protection setting can block crawlers that robots.txt allows.

2. Get Your Pages Into Bing’s Index

Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your XML sitemap, and turn on IndexNow so Bing hears about new and updated pages right away. Do this even when Google indexing is complete, because Bing keeps a separate index. (The Bing setup section below covers each step.)

3. Answer the Question in the First Lines (Answer Engine Optimization)

Put a direct answer of one or two sentences at the top of each section, under a heading that matches the question a buyer would ask.

Definitions, comparison tables, and FAQ blocks are the content formats for GEO and AEO that an AI engine can quote without rewriting.

4. Add Statistics, Quotes, and Named Sources

A research team that included Princeton computer scientists tested ways to rewrite pages for AI answer engines. In their paper on GEO, changes such as adding statistics, quotations, and citations raised a page’s visibility in AI-generated answers by up to 40%. They also found the effect varies by topic.

Name the source of each number, add a date, and include first-hand data that other pages don’t have. Cite each figure to a reliable source, and use sources that other publications already trust.

5. Earn Mentions on Sites ChatGPT Already Cites

Ask ChatGPT your top buyer questions and note the third-party sites it cites. Those are your targets: industry roundups, review platforms, news coverage, and forums such as Reddit.

Expert quotes placed through journalist request services such as HARO and Qwoted get your brand named in news stories, which is how you build authority for AI search beyond your own domain. Aim for relevant publications in your industry. Each one adds an AI brand mention in the right category.

6. Make Your Brand Easy to Identify

Add Organization schema to your homepage with your logo, founding details, and sameAs links to your profiles on LinkedIn, review sites, and social platforms. Use the same brand name, description, and service names everywhere.

Keep your brand voice consistent as well, so a short description of your company reads the same on your site, your profiles, and third-party listings.

7. Keep Key Pages Current

Update the pages you want cited when prices, data, or products change, and show the updated date on the page. Each time you publish or update a page, IndexNow tells Bing about it, so the new version can be found sooner.

Fresh content signals care and relevance to AI platforms, and it matters because the sources ChatGPT cites change quickly. Profound’s July 2025 study found that roughly 40-60% of the domains cited in AI responses were different one month later, even for identical questions. The figure for ChatGPT was 54.1%.

Run a content audit on your high-value pages every quarter to find outdated figures, thin sections, and pages that have lost ground.

Optimize Your Website Content for AI Parsing

Content must be structured for easy parsing by AI tools. ChatGPT and other AI tools work from the text on your page, so how you lay out website content affects how much of it they can use. The sections below cover the formatting and markup that make a page easier to quote.

Structure Content in Short, Answer-Ready Chunks

ChatGPT tends to prefer content structured in digestible, answer-ready chunks. To structure content this way, keep paragraphs to three or four sentences, give each section one question to answer, and put the answer first. Use bullet points for lists and steps, and tables for comparisons. Short paragraphs help readers on a phone and help AI tools lift a passage without the text around it.

Write for User Intent in Natural Language

Match each page to the search intent behind the query, whether the buyer wants a definition, a comparison, a price, or a how-to. Matching user intent also keeps readers on the page, which supports user satisfaction.

Buyers type specific user queries in natural language, so write headings and answers in the same plain wording instead of repeating exact keywords. Keyword stuffing makes a passage read badly and adds no context for an AI model. Use your target keywords where they fit the sentence, and add relevant context, such as who the advice is for and what it costs.

Add Structured Data and Schema Markup

Generating structured data helps search engines understand a page better. Schema markup is the standard way to do it: Organization schema for your brand, Article schema for posts, and FAQPage schema for question-and-answer blocks. ChatGPT search draws on search engine results, so a page that search engines understand well gives it better material to work with.

ChatGPT can write the JSON-LD for you from a short description of the page. Check the output in Google’s Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator before you publish it.

Use Descriptive URLs

An analysis of 250 million AI search responses presented by Josh Blyskal found that pages with natural-language URLs received 11.4% more citations. It compared the 50,000 most-cited pages with the 50,000 least-cited, so it shows a pattern and does not prove that URLs cause citations.

The step is cheap for new pages. Use a short, descriptive slug of four to seven words, such as /how-to-rank-in-chatgpt/ instead of /p=4821/. Change the URL of an existing page only when a 301 redirect is in place.

Publish High-Quality Content

To publish high-quality content that AI platforms cite, add something other pages don’t have, like first-hand data, original examples, and expert input. Publishing unique, helpful content builds topical relevance and encourages user engagement.

Content must be clear, trustworthy, and aligned to the question to rank well.

That is the base of a content strategy for AI search. Cover each topic in depth with quality content, and skip thin pages written for single keywords.

Set Up Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow

Bing setup takes less than an hour for most sites.

  1. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools. You can import a site you’ve already verified in Google Search Console, which skips the DNS or meta tag step.
  2. Submit your sitemap. Add your XML sitemap URL (for example, sitemap_index.xml on a Yoast site) under Sitemaps.
  3. Turn on IndexNow. IndexNow is a protocol that notifies search engines when you add, update, or delete a page. Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yep, and Amazon accept it, according to the IndexNow FAQ. Several WordPress SEO plugins, and Microsoft’s own IndexNow plugin, can submit URLs for you.
  4. Resubmit your most important URLs. Send your service pages and best-performing posts through IndexNow or the URL Submission tool so Bing crawls them again.
  5. Check the AI Performance report. Bing began rolling out AI Performance reporting in Webmaster Tools in early 2026. It shows how often your pages appear in Bing’s AI answers and which queries triggered them. OpenAI offers no search console, so in our experience this report is the nearest substitute for ChatGPT data.

How to Track Your ChatGPT Visibility

OpenAI doesn’t offer a dashboard for publishers, so tracking takes three sources together.

  • Referral traffic: ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends, so you can filter those visits in Google Analytics.
  • Manual prompt checks: Ask ChatGPT 10 to 20 buyer questions with web search on each month, and record whether you’re mentioned and cited.
  • Tracking tools: AI visibility tools run your prompts on a schedule and report mentions, citations, and share of voice against competitors.
  • Search Console and Bing reports: A page that is not indexed cannot be cited, so check SEO health and SEO performance for the pages you want cited alongside your AI results.

Because citations shift from month to month, compare each month’s results with the last instead of judging from one check.

When ChatGPT SEO Shouldn’t Be Your First Priority

If your site has little content on the questions your buyers ask, start there. ChatGPT can’t cite a page you haven’t written, and the same pages also serve Google. If your buyers find you through referrals or local search and rarely research vendors in ChatGPT, track a few prompts and put most of your budget into the channels they use.

Create Content ChatGPT Can Cite

Getting cited in ChatGPT takes three things: let its crawlers and Bing find your pages, publish pages that answer buyer questions with named sources, and earn mentions on the sites ChatGPT already cites.

Start with the access steps in this guide, because the other two jobs have no effect if Bing can’t index your pages.

Contentellect writes SEO content for agencies and their clients. Each piece is built around the questions buyers ask in search and in AI assistants, in the format this guide describes: a TL;DR, a direct answer under each heading, and named sources.

ChatGPT SEO FAQs

How do you do SEO for ChatGPT?

Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your host, get your pages indexed in Bing, and write pages that answer buyer questions directly with named sources. Then earn mentions on third-party sites ChatGPT already cites for your topic.

How do I get my brand mentioned in ChatGPT?

Get your brand named on the pages ChatGPT cites for your category, such as industry roundups, review sites, and news stories. Expert quotes, review profiles, and inclusion in “best of” lists all add those mentions.

How long does it take to rank in ChatGPT?

OpenAI doesn’t publish a timeline. A page can appear in ChatGPT search once it’s in the search index ChatGPT draws on, and IndexNow can speed that up, while mentions from training data change only when OpenAI trains a new model.

Do keywords still matter for ChatGPT SEO?

Yes, as topics and not as repeated strings. Choose target keywords for the question a page answers, use them where they fit the sentence, and skip exact-keyword repetition and keyword stuffing.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No. ChatGPT search draws on search engine results, so pages that are indexed and rank are the pages it can cite. Most of the work in GEO vs SEO overlaps, because the same well-sourced pages serve both.

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?

OpenAI’s publisher FAQ doesn’t describe any way to pay for placement in ChatGPT search results. Citations depend on whether OpenAI finds a page relevant to the user’s question.
